Talcum Powder Lawsuits Get New Medical Study

The European Journal of Cancer Prevention has released a new study related to Johnson & Johnson's baby powder lawsuits that found the company's cosmetic boosts ovarian cancer risk.

Friday, January 27, 2017 - A new medical study conducted by the European Journal of Cancer Prevention has added to the narrative pushed by plaintiffs filing Johnson & Johnson's baby powder lawsuits that the company's popular cosmetic powder is linked to ovarian cancer. A number of studies have already made this link, and to date juries have come down hard on Johnson & Johnson in light of studies just like this one. The study, which was published in the European Journal of Cancer Prevention on January 11, found that women who used talcum powder for genital hygiene saw their risk for contracting ovarian cancer rise by 20 percent.

The European Journal of Cancer Prevention study included more than 300,000 ovarian cancer patients and was culled from a meta-analysis of 24 prior published works on the topic. The authors of the paper concluded their findings were statistically significant, and that distinction could be a critical piece of evidence for plaintiffs filing Johnson & Johnson's baby powder lawsuits. The study builds a strong case for the connection between talcum powder and ovarian cancer, and it isn't the first published study to do so.

The medical study adds to the more than 20 already being presented by talcum powder attorneys on behalf of plaintiffs in the claims. The evidence has led to all of the past three talcum powder lawsuit trials coming down in favor of the plaintiffs. The content of medical evidence against Johnson & Johnson combined with the sheer amount of published articles that exist linking talcum powder to ovarian cancer has been a key element to juries finding Johnson & Johnson guilty in the courtroom.

Medical research throughout the past five decades has continually built up evidence against the safety of Johnson & Johnson's talcum powder products. It began in the early 1970s as simple investigations into the presence of talc in cancerous ovarian tumors. From there, more research was conducted using large data sets of women who used talcum powder daily for genital health. The results from those reached a correlation as high as 35 percent between talcum powder use and ovarian cancer.

In addition to medical research, evidence against Johnson & Johnson includes internal documents discovered by talcum powder lawyers that prove the company had been aware of this problem for decades, as well as investigations into the organization's penchant for targeting minority consumers after they had discovered the negative health effects of talcum powder. These kinds of stories coupled with the growing number of medical studies has created the environment in which talcum powder lawsuit trials can be regularly going the plaintiff's way.

A new talcum powder lawsuit trial will soon begin in the City of St. Louis Circuit Court, where the three claims that were won by plaintiffs were heard last year. It is unknown whether the evidence presented by the European Journal of Cancer Prevention will be used in defense of the plaintiff in this particular case, but it was released early enough that it could serve as a fresh piece of evidence for the plaintiff's baby powder attorneys.
